US Court Allows Lawsuits Over AI-Driven Social Media Addiction to Proceed

Section 230 does not cover the algorithm itself, the court decided. Plaintiffs get to argue the rest in front of a jury.

A US federal appeals court ruled that thousands of lawsuits against Meta, Google, TikTok, and Snapchat can proceed. Plaintiffs allege these companies' AI-powered recommendation systems were intentionally designed to be addictive, causing mental health harm to young users. The court rejected the companies' Section 230 immunity claims.
